Does the Chicago Fire’s problem lie in attack or defense? Or both?

As frustrating as it may be to do so, take a minute and think back to the 58th minute of Sunday night’s defeat to the Colorado Rapids. Newly acquired Rapids midfielder Martin Rivero hits a long ball towards the Fire’s left-hand corner for Brian Mullan to chase. Clearly tired and lacking the pace needed to catch Mullan, Gonzalo Segares lags several yards behind and cannot prevent the Colorado veteran from reaching the ball, looking up and examining his options, and finding Omar Cummings unmarked in the center of the box with acres of space. 1-0 to the home side.

My problem with this goal doesn’t even lie with Segares, apart from his lack of effort to stop the cross, but the main culprits for this goal are the Fire’s center-backs: Cory Gibbs and Jalil Anibaba. The pair have built a formidable defensive partnership together, but they simply weren’t at their best on Sunday. The image below portrays just how much space they left for Cummings, a type of sin when committed in one’s own penalty box.

Omar Cummings finds himself in acres of space for Colorado's opening goal against the Fire on Sunday.

But is defense really the main problem for the Chicago Fire and the main area for Frank Klopas to address before Houston’s visit to Toyota Park on April 15th? I’m not convinced. Continue reading

Don’t Stop Living In the Red: A sport fan’s views on his first Chicago Fire match

Attending your first Chicago Fire match is the type of experience you don’t forget very quickly. That will certainly be the case for Alex Smith, a Michigan native and friend of mine, who attended his first ever Fire match on Saturday in the Fire’s 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids at Toyota Park. Alex was in for a real treat that day too as the men in red put forth one of their best performances of the season to register back-to-back home wins for the first time this season. As always, Section 8 was also in full voice all night long to ensure his first experience at Toyota Park was one to remember. I caught up with Alex to talk to him about his thoughts on attending his first Chicago Fire match. Continue reading

Three Main Points: Chicago Fire 2-0 Colorado Rapids

Both of Chicago's goalscorers from Saturday night's win

7:30 p.m., Toyota Park. Attendance: 15,211. Referee: Juan Guzman

A few hours before the Chicago Fire kicked off against the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night at Toyota Park, Dominic Oduro (@FreakyFast8) tweeted “Was just watching bolt run and I wish I was as fast as him.” Well, let’s just say there was one or two people in the Rapids team who were wishing the same thing about Oduro. The Ghanaian scored his ninth goal of the season with a terrific breakaway goal in the first half that we’ve come to expect from him. The finish on this occasion wasn’t too bad either, especially for a player who has taken so much heat for his finishing this season. Cory Gibbs nodded home a second goal before halftime to send the Fire on their way to a second consecutive win for the first time this entire season, setting the team up nicely for a US Open Cup semi-final match on Tuesday.

Here are my three main points from the Fire’s 2-0 win over Colorado: Continue reading

The Chicago Fire finally got that second win at home, but can they continue to improve their home form?

League home wins for the Chicago Fire during the past five seasons:

2006 – 8

2007 – 6

2008 – 7

2009 – 5

2010 – 4

So far in 2011 the Chicago Fire have only won two home matches at Toyota Park in MLS play, one of which came last Sunday against Toronto FC courtesy of goals from Dominic Oduro and Dan Gargan. The other? Well, that win came all the way back on March 26th in a 3-2 win over Sporting Kansas City. An incredible eight draws and two losses have occurred between both of the Fire’s home wins, a statistic few would have predicted prior to the start of the season.

But just how will that statistic look at the end of the year? Have the Fire finally turned the corner following Sunday’s win? Continue reading

Chicago Fire vs. Vancouver Whitecaps: 5 things to watch for

After a winless April, the Chicago Fire are in desperate need of a win in front of Toyota Park on Saturday night against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Fire haven’t won since defeating Sporting FC on March 26th and have slipped to eight place in the Eastern Conference. The Whitecaps, one of two newly expansion teams this year, come to town also in need of a result after winning just once in eight attempts so far this season. Coach Teitur Thordarson’s side currently sits in eighth place in the West, just a single point ahead of last placed San Jose and with both teams in such indifferent form and in dire need of a win, look for both sets of players to really have a go tomorrow.

Form guide:

Chicago: L-L-L-T-T

Vancouver: T-L-T-T-T

 5 things to watch for:

Defense – Neither team boasts a particularly strong defense and both clubs have been culpable of numerous defensive errors this season. In fact, a worrying statistic for the Fire is that they have yet to register a clean sheet this season. Carlos de los Cobos will certainly hope to see that chance on Saturday, although the absence of Josip Mikulic will be a huge blow. Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have yet to find consistency in the back too and will once again be hampered by injuries this weekend, particularly to US defender Jay Demerit. We could see defensive errors decide this one.

From Columbia to the Windy City – The Chicago Fire announced on Tuesday the signing of Christian Nazarit. The Columbian striker brings a decent goal ratio and could make his first appearance for the club on Saturday. Keep an eye out for how well he links up with Diego Chaves as well as the Fire midfield. It may take him a few matches to settle, but Toyota Park will certainly be anxious to catch an early glimpse of the 20-year-old’s capabilities tomorrow night.

Shea Salinas – After being sidelined by injury for the majority of the season so far, the Whitecaps midfielder recently made his debut and will look to settle in the team and make an impact. His speed and skill will make him an important dimension to a Vancouver attack that has still yet to really get going this season. The Fire will have to keep tabs on him.

Midfield dilemma – Eight games into the season now and de los Cobos is still yet to find a midfield shape or lineup that he is pleased with. Logan Pause’s injury last weekend forced Carlos to employ a five man midfield including Paladini, Bone, Oduro, Pappa and Puerari. The plan backfired as the Fire completely failed to maintain possession and grab a hold on the match. It will be interesting to see what de los Cobos opts for on Saturday. Strangely, de los Cobos was happy with the midfield last weekend. Judging by that, he may even play the same lineup. If he does, he better hope they have a better collective performance than they did last weekend.

Hold on tight – The past two matches have seen the Fire take the lead only to surrender their advantage in the second half. Against Houston the Fire were 10 minutes away from earning a much needed victory before conceding from a set-piece and last weekend saw the Rapids capitalize on some poor defending soon after the restart. If the Fire can score first tomorrow, they will have to ensure they have learned their lessons and maintain that lead. It’s time for the Fire to show some mettle, get the win, and hopefully look forward to a good run of form.
